History:

Malcolm Meryln’s real name is Arthur King and not much is known about his early history. At 19 he joined the Air Force Academy and graduated with honors. He was never given the chance to serve as a group called the Hidden recruited him to work closely with them finding and protecting mystical artifacts from the League of Assassins. Malcolm/Arthur used the opportunity to steal one of the artifacts the Hidden was protecting and flee back to his home base of Starling City. He sold the artifact for a decent amount of cash and used the money to start his own transport company Merlyn Global.

Malcolm then changed his name so he could move and in the upper echelons of Starling City society and hide from the enemies he’d made. He met his future wife Rebecca not long after coming to Starling and they married, but the city wasn’t going to allow them to be happy for long. Starling City was a place corrupted by greed, crime and full of people willing to turn a blind eye to its dark corners and the people who ruled over them. Malcolm was once one of those people who turned away from the city’s darkness until its evil found him and forced him to see Starling for the corrupted place it truly was.

Rebecca Merlyn was the innocent victim whose murder opened her husband’s eyes to the truth. Shot by a mugger while walking in a section of the city called the Glades late one night, Rebecca called her husband and begged him for help as she lay dying on the ground. Malcolm later learned several witnesses had seen his wife’s murder and done nothing to help choosing to save their own lives over hers. He attempted to track down his wife’s murderer himself and just barely managed to kill the man with a well-placed bullet while the criminal attempted to beat Malcolm to death. He will later learn the man he killed was a scapegoat for the true murderer Daniel Brick, whose life Malcolm will then spare at the request of his reluctant allies at the time.

Malcolm realized that killing his wife’s murderer did nothing to ease his anger and grief. He blamed the city itself for her death and decided it needed to be cleansed of the criminal element. He also knew he wasn’t yet strong enough to bring his plans to fruition, but he knew of a man who could teach him to channel his anger into death. Turning his back on his young son Tommy, Malcolm followed rumor and legend to Nanda Parbat, the home of Ra’s Al Ghul and the League of Assassins the people he once fought against with the Hidden. He asked the man to help him and Ra’s agreed seeing a darkness in Malcolm he felt he could shape into something dangerous.

For twenty years, Malcolm trained and fought becoming Ra’s right hand, but his goal was never far from his mind, and he conceived of a machine that would pull the Glades apart allowing him to rebuild it in his own image. His ability to think and plan himself out of any difficult situation earned him the nickname “Al Sāḥir[” or “The Magician.” And when he wished to return to Starling, Ra’s released him with the understanding that he would follow the League’s oath in everything he did.

Malcolm returned to Starling an angry and distant man who used his former friends as pawns in his great undertaking. He slept with Moira Queen to gain her trust, which resulted in a daughter, willingly murdered her husband and his best friend when his plans were threatened and turned his back on the League the second they stopped being useful to him. He didn’t even care his own son died in the aftermath of his plan to wipe the Glades clean and rebuild even though he claimed later Tommy’s death shattered his soul.

The only one able to stop Malcolm was Oliver Queen, Robert’s son, who was caught in Malcolm’s murder plot and survived for five years on a somewhat deserted island. He returned to Starling wanting to make up for his father’s mistakes and he and Malcolm clashed several times discovering that they balanced each other in both fighting styles and temperament. Oliver barely manages to defeat Malcolm, but Malcolm manages to both destroy part of the Glades and fake his own death by easily out maneuvering Oliver.

For a year, Malcolm manages to hide from justice until he discovers the truth about Thea Queen and he realizes the blood debt the League has now placed on his head will also affect his only living child. He once again becomes the master manipulator using Thea to murder Sara Lance without Thea’s knowledge. This brings the League down hard on Malcolm, but he uses his family connection to Oliver to claim innocence and ask for protection from his enemy, which Oliver begrudgingly gives him.

The truth is revealed soon enough, however, and Malcolm blackmails Oliver into a trial by combat with Ra’s which the younger archer does not supposedly survive. Thea too learns the truth about her biological father after her half-brother returns from death. While Oliver realizes they need Malcolm in order to defeat Ra’s, Thea does not see any value in Malcolm and confesses the truth to Ra’s daughter Nyssa assisting the Heir to the Demon in capturing Malcolm and sending him back to Nanda Parbat to face justice.

Malcolm's involvement in these events has stripped away more of his cold and distant nature to reveal his more emotional side. However, because he is such a masterful liar and has easily concealed both himself and his plans from those he claims to love, Malcolm finds himself often on the outside looking in when it comes to actually being part of a family again. He claims this does not bother him that he is more interested in saving his own neck then those of his allies.

Does your character have any close ties to existing canon characters? (Canon OCs and AUs only.)

Malcolm’s main connection is Thea Queen who is his daughter and the player is aware I wish to bring Malcolm into the game.

Why do you think your character would work in this setting?

Malcolm accepted Eli’s offer because at the time he was hanging from his wrists over a bed of hot coals and bleeding to death. So coming to a town in the middle of a nowhere planet was better than preparing to die. Once he arrives, however, Malcolm will see this as a second chance and use it to his full advantage signing in under his real name of Arthur King rather than using the name he has chosen for over twenty years.
While Malcolm is used to having people do things for him, he also isn’t above getting his hands dirty when he needs to and he will happily throw himself into work without much complaining. He see this as another opportunity to start from the bottom up only he’ll try going straight for his daughter’s sake if nothing else.

How do you plan to expand their CR?

Malcolm is all about being social and planning how to make the best kind of friend aka, people he can use to his own ends. However, he knows those who know him well will be in town and so he’ll assume at first people will have heard all about him and so he will be hesitant to approach anyone at first. Once someone makes the first move, Malcolm/Arthur will happily start making friends again.

What will your character do for work?
Malcolm would be very good at welcoming people into New Dodge and so I’m hoping he’d be able to become the last Customs Clerk.

Inventory:

He won’t be bringing anything with him but the ragged clothes on his back and a ton of injuries that will need clinic time.

Third-Person Sample:

Malcolm knew he was dead from the moment Thea turned him over to Nyssa for justice. He was out of plans, out of time and he couldn’t have been prouder of his daughter. Most other parents would have been furious, but Malcolm knew well how the world worked and knew only the strong and the willing survived in its darkness. He’d promised to train strength into Thea and he’d done it at the cost of his own life.

But he wasn’t going to give Ra’s the satisfaction of dying properly. He would show no weakness, make no sound as his feet burned and the pain rose. He would prove to those in the League that he was still their brother and that he could die with honor even though he didn’t always act as though he had any. Suddenly one of the shadows detracted itself from the wall and became a man. For a moment, Malcolm thought he was in the dream state before death, but then the man spoke and Malcolm knew it wasn’t a dream.

It was Fate offering her magician yet another chance at life and mistakes aside, Malcolm Meryln wasn’t about to turn down anything she might be offering, Life in any form was more desirable then even dying with honor would be. And he was more than willing to live. The man spoke in a low voice, his tone calm and even. “I have an offer for you,” he said and Malcolm managed a wet chuckle and a painful shrug of his shoulders.

“As long as it has nothing to do with time shares I’m in,” he joked, “doesn’t matter where you might be going or what you might want me to do.” The man nodded as if he’d been expecting this and Malcolm felt hope flare in his heart. The Magician was going to live to make another plan and he was ready for the adventure that plan might bring.

First-Person Sample:

My Dearest Rebecca,

I know writing to you makes very little sense given that you’ve been gone for over 20 years now, but you are the only one I care to write to, so here we are.

I’m leaving Starling City…. for good this time. I can hear you in my head asking why and it was long past time my love. You’re gone, Tommy is gone and Thea has chosen, wisely I might add, her half-brother over me. So there is nothing to hold me here and its time to admit that.

I’m glad for the years you and I had together. You made me better then I’d ever thought I could be and I will never forgive myself for the way I let you down. You should have survived; Tommy should have survived. But in both cases I let my work and my pain get in the way of my family and you both were lost because of it.

Where I am going I hope I can make things right. I’ve most likely burned through all my second chances and eight other lives, but I have to try. I hope where ever you and Tommy are, that you will look down on me from time to time and cheer me on. And maybe someday we will be together again for good or ill.

Never forget how much I loved you.

Yours,

Malcolm
