Character Information

Character Name: Malcolm Meryln

Canon: Arrow

Canon Point: 3X15 Nanda Parbat

Character Journal: welldressedevil

Appearance:

Malcolm is an even six feet with dark brown hair and bright blue eyes. He carries himself well knowing he has a mission in the world and what he has to do, he never slouches or slumps while sitting and always looks anyone he is speaking to in the eye.  When in business mode, Malcolm wears well tailored suits with sharp lines and well shined shoes.

When conducting missions for the League or his own plans, Malcolm's appearance changes. His armor is black leather with a huge hood that covers his face. He slouches more often, because it is easier to sneak from place to place if you look like a tiny shadow. His fighting style is very much  smash and grab when he isn't hiding and shooting people long range.

Age: 48 years old

History:

Malcolm Nikos Meryln was  born the only child of Edric and Kaia Meryln, From an early age Malcolm  knew he was going to be one of the richest people in Starling City and hated the very idea of lording over people. However, both his partents made it clear, he did not get a choice in the matter. He would take over the family company or be disowned. This did not please Malcolm in the slightest and his answer was to become a playboy using his family money to party heavily with his best friend Robert Queen, whose family was also Starling City royalty.

His father was a cold man who spent more time with his mistresses and his business partners then with his wife and son. Kaia did her best to teach Malcolm right from wrong, but Malcolm considered his mother weak and overly willing to let his father do whatever he wanted. The more Malcolm rebelled the the more his father tried to reign him in and his mother stood back and watched it happen. Malcolm finally realized that he couldn't fight his fathers desires and became as closed off and cold as Edric, taking his place as head of Merlyn Global when he was 21.

Malcom kept up his playboy ways even as Robert settled down and married his wife Moira. Malcolm supported Robert's choices and became a good friend to them both. At 25, Malcolm met Rebecca Most, a pretty young woman from the Glades. It was love at first sight for them both, but Malcolm's parents did not approve of the match. Malcolm stood up to his father for the first time in a long time and said he would marry Rebecca with our without his parents permission. Edric backed down realizing Malcolm was now the type of man who could both lead a company and a family without flinching.

Malcolm and Rebecca married when he was 26 and she was 23. Moira Queen then took the young woman under her wing teaching her how to navigate Starling City society and the couple's friendship deepened over time even as Starling City itself began to suffer from corruption and crime. Malcolm and Rebecca were blessed with a son they named Tommy around the same time the Queen's welcomed a son named Oliver. The two boys would grow up side by side and consider themselves best friends.

In an effort to combat poverty and poor health in the neighborhood she had once called home, Rebecca started a free clinic and a foundation to support it using start up money from Malcolm and Meryln Global. Malcolm did worry about Rebecca's safety but Rebecca laughed off his concerns continuing to volunteer there as Tommy grew older. Malcolm was proud of the work his wife did even as he worried about her.

When Tommy was ten, life changed for the Meryln family. Malcolm came home from a late night at work to discover Rebecca gone. Tommy told him his mother had gone to the clinic to take care of a frightened client and had left him home alone. Malcolm didn't worry as Rebecca had done this before. Later that night, the police informed Malcolm his wife had been murdered by an unknown man on her way home over her wallet.  Drowning in grief, Malcolm then discovered a voicemail on his phone from Rebecca as she lay dying begging for his help. He carries the guilt of his inaction to this day.

Using what resources he had access to at the time, Malcolm went after the young man he believed had murdered Rebecca and barely managed to kill him without getting hurt himself. Realizing how that the city he loved had become corrupt enough that people would walk past a dying woman without stopping to help, Malcolm decided to find someone who would train him to save his city from itself.

Rumor and legend carried him to Nanda Parbat where he swore an oath of loyalty to Ra's Al Ghul, the Demon's Head and leader of the League of Assassins. For the next decade or so, Malcolm was trained and sent on missions to kill those who had gone against the League. His cleverness and strategy  as well as his ability to some how magically get out of any situation earned him the nickname "Al Sahir" or "The Magician" by Nyssa Al Ghul, Ra's daughter and heir.

Malcolm returned to Starling City and took back control of his company from it's board of directors and tried to pick up where he left off with Tommy. Tommy, however, was angry that his father abandoned him and from the moment Malcolm returned their relationship was cold, stormy and angry until Tommy's death. Malcolm turned to Moira Queen for solace. Their affair was brief, but resulted in a child Thea Queen though Malcolm didn't learn this for many years.

His mind was focused on his great "Undertaking" a plan that would level the Glades and allow Malcolm and others to buy up the real estate and rebuild everything from the ground up. The Queen's joined Malcolm in his quest and Queen Consolidated designed and built a pair of earthquake machines to level the neighborhood, including killing the people who lived there. Robert, however, doubted the wisdom of the plan and confronted Malcolm begging him to stop.

Malcolm's response was to convince Robert to take a trip on his yacht the Queen's Gambit during which a planted bomb went off and sank the ship with Robert on board. What Malcolm didn't know was that Oliver had snuck onto the ship to be with his girlfriend Sara. Malcolm made a good show of mourning his lost friend but he forced Moira to continue with the Undertaking.

Five years after the Queen's  Gambit went down, Oliver Queen returned to Starling City alive and well. Malcolm did everything thing he could to find out what Robert told his son. At the same time, a vigilante called the Hood began confronting people associated with the Undertaking and trying to stop the people of the Glades from getting hurt. Malcolm attacked the Hood twice, nearly killing him both times and learning that Oliver Queen was the Hood.

Even though Malcolm was horrified what his actions had turned Oliver into, he refused to stop the Undertaking and the two men confronted each other. The fight was long, brutal and Malcolm almost won but Oliver stabbed Malcolm in the heart believing the older man had died as the second earthquake device was set off killing 542 people. Malcolm, however, survived the attack and faked his death using switched bodies and willing accomplices.

He left Starling City prepared to live his life on the run when information passed to him by a spy revealed Thea Queen's true parentage. Malcolm confronted Moira and she threaten to reveal his whereabouts to Ra's. Only Moira's death at the hands of Slade Wilson stopped this from happening and Malcolm returned to Starling to save his daughter and convince her to train with him.

He took Thea to his safe house in Corto Maltese and trained her in the ways of the League gaining her trust and love. He used that trust to murder Sara Lance, who had come to Starling City to find Malcolm and bring him back to Nanda Parbat. Oliver learned all this but agreed to keep it secret if Malcolm would train him to face Ra's and win. Thea also discovered her father's plans and at first joined the training sessions until Malcolm sent Oliver and Thea to face Slade Wilson without telling them.

Thea became furious with her father's lies and contacted the League revealing Malcolm's location to them. Nyssa was then sent to bring Malcolm back to Ra's to face the immortal's justice.

[Because canon has revealed little about Malcolm's early years including his ethnic background the top set of paragraphs are all my head canon. His canon background came from here: http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Malcolm_Merlyn_(Arrow) with some adjustments to fit the headcanon into it.]

Personality:

The best word to describe Malcolm Meryln's personality is duplicitous. He can be everyone's best friend in one moment and then turn around and stab his so called friend or family in the back in the next breath.  He is forceful, cold and focused on his needs at the expense of his family. He doesn't care who he has to step on to bring his plans to fruition.

While Malcolm sees this as his greatest strength it is actually his biggest flaw. Because Malcolm is so willing to use his loved ones as pawns in his plans, they then turn their backs on him and refuse to believe any of his warnings or advice even though his advice most often turns out to be right. He doesn't give up, however, warning people he cares about over and over again when they are going

While Malcolm believes his anger gives him strength and focus it also has turned him into a cold seemingly soulless man who willingly killed over 600 innocent people without blinking an eye. He also turned a trained killer on his daughter and her half brother and called it training, drugged that same daughter into becoming a murderer herself and made no apologies for any of it. He never considered himself in the wrong and seems offended when other people called him on this.

That is not to say Malcolm doesn't feel at all. Death of any kind affects him on a visceral level. He cannot speak of his son Tommy without freezing and when his hope that Oliver would win against Ra's failed, he wept for the young man who was like a second son to him. He also appears to take every cruel word said about him to heart when he is alone.

Malcolm is also very loyal to his allies. If someone asks him for help he will give it, though not without a price. He doesn't believe in getting something for nothing. He has a very skewed world view, seeing love and any other positive emotion as a weakness, when he is actually much stronger if he fights to protect rather than to use someone.

Malcolm's greatest strength is his bravery. He willingly walks into situations where he knows he will most likely die. He also isn't afraid to tell people what he thinks of a given situation.  Nothing is of limits to him and he'll do what needs to be done to save his own life and the lives of the people he cares about. Another strength is being able to stand back and let someone else take charge when the situation calls for it. He also is willing to make alliances with people who hate him in order to keep himself safe.

Powers/Special Abilities:

Advanced archery
-Advanced hand to hand combat
-Stealth
- Advanced tactical analysis
- Deception

River Power:

The river will gift Malcolm with the abilities of water elemental. This will allow him to bend water to his will no matter the form as he trains and learns what the river has given him.

Reason for Character Choice:

I love playing Malcolm, because he is a complex character with many different layers to him. Peeling back each of those layers allows me to put my own spin on the character. Also because the show hasn’t explaining of Malcolm’s background beyond his wife’s death and his villainous plans regarding revenge for her death, playing him has allowed me to explore his background in my own way and try to figure out where his willingness to act so cold to others may have come from.

First-Person Transmission Sample:

[A man appears on camera dressed in black studded leather armor. A matching quiver full of  black arrows and a bow are slung over his back and the expression on his face is a mixture of angry and a touch of amusement.]

Thea, Oliver? What happened?

The last thing I remember was Ra's tossing the virus vial and falling asleep and then I was here. If this is some sort of joke it isn't funny.

[The man looks around his expression becoming colder the more he views his new situation.]

The world is ending and I need to get back home now. I have no patience for games.

Third-Person Log Sample:

Malcolm knew he wouldn't leave Nanda alive, but he never dreamed Ra's would make him suffer through a hell like this first. The coals beneath him had a grate between them and his skin, but to Malcolm it felt like the coals were burning right against his skin. He glared at Ra's tying to communicate his utter contempt and hatred for the man who had taken him in and honed his grief into something lethal.

But Malcolm's sense of justice had been skewed since he'd first listened to his wife's voice mail and learned she had died while others had ignored her cries for help. There was no honor in a situation like that and nothing the League taught him had changed his way of thinking for the better.  He had tried to learn, tried to expand his world view and find honor in killing others, but all he could hear was Rebecca begging him for help, begging him to make the city better for her, so that no one else would suffer the way she had.

"Are you expecting me to beg," Malcolm rasped a note of amusement in his voice despite being in the worst pain of his life, "we both know I'll die before that ever happens." Ra's chuckled and shook his head. "Still trying to talk yourself out of a bad situation," the Demon's Head replied, "there was a time when I would have enjoyed letting you do that."

Ra's picked up a pair of tongs and pulled out one of the coals. "But now you have pushed me much too far and I must make an example of you." He leaned forward and Malcolm flinched as the heat touched his skin. He took a deep breath and focused on anything but the burning smell of his feet and face. While he knew he would die far from home with most of his family lost to him, Malcolm was determined to die with his own emotionless form of dignity.

Rebecca would expect nothing less from him.
